I recently watched Woody Allen’s MIDNIGHT IN PARIS and if you haven’t yet seen it then you should (Quentin Tarantino rated it #1 in his 2011 list of best movies: http://bit.ly/yZBKM1).
The cast, the story, and the images of Paris were all wonderful. I especially loved the portrayal of famous persons from the 1920s (Hemingway speaking in long drawn out sentences was perfect). Woody Allen has done it again.

But what really stuck with me is the idea that everyone has their own idea of a “Golden” era - the era that you would like to live in, that you feel is better than your present. For Owen Wilson’s character it was the 1920s in Paris.
This got me thinking. What would mine be? I’ve always said that I would rather have grown up in the ’60s in New York, California, or London - the possibility of seeing the great musicians before they become icons is enough to sway me, let alone the fashion!

But the ’20s do have a certain “je ne se quois” about them too - The music was roaring and every documentary and film I’ve seen about the ’20s are quite persuasive about the greatness of it’s time - oh, to be a guest at a Gatsby-like party.

But then the Great Depression crashes in and soon WWII rears its ugly head.
Nope. There’s nothing wonderful enough during the ’20s that could ever convince me to live through WWII.
Come to think of it, there are a lot of negatives during every era that I wouldn’t want to live through: no modern plumbing, the plague, witch hunts, slavery, wars, inequality, etc. And especially as a women (when were birth control, tampons and Advil invented?) No, I think I’ll stick with this time that I’m living in and hope that the future doesn’t hold the worst eras this world will see.
What would your “Golden” era be?
*looking at the list of negatives reminds me that there are still in this day and age places where these negatives are still very prominent. It has been said time and time again, but we in Canada do take a lot for granted. Not only am I glad to live in this present time, but also here in Canada. I hope the time comes soon when all can live as we do.
